Sixteen women go on a watery adventure to embrace all that they are, mere particles, stardust with pulse and purpose, waves in a tempestuous ocean still learning how to rise and fall with grace.

Under the exquisite choreography of WA artist Daryl Branwood, he guides these MADE ensemble dancers to lighthouses, keepers of storms and seekers of calm.

Daryl first came to Hobart last August for a weekend workshop and the MADE ensemble immediately responded to his calm direction that was both tender and strong. He then came back in March for a week intensive where the women held his movements in their bodies as connection became choreography, memory became muscle, and the ensemble learnt to move as a school of fish undulating in this watery world.

There was much merriment along the way, especially during the beach sequence — a playful nod to a 1960s beach party awash in psychedelic neons. Here, the dancers were invited to cocreate, shaping their own movement for a small, joyous section of the work.

For two months, the women met twice weekly to keep the choreography alive, rehearsing with dedication. Daryl continued to send new material via video, which they wove into the growing repertoire.

Through Particles Daryl showed us what we are: cosmic dust, waves colliding, fishermen and lighthouses, kids building sand kingdoms. He gives us joy, movement, and the truth of being fully, fiercely alive.

The making of this work was a profound pleasure for all involved — a celebration of connection, creativity, and the deep humanness we share. Particles reminds us that dance is far more than movement; it is memory, meaning, and the shimmering thread that binds us.
